Meet our friends: Douglas Gowen’s style is ‘subtle with a bit of sparkle’

We have some amazing clients, many of whom have now become friends, and one of them, Douglas Gowen, was happy to tell us all about his relationship with fine jewellery and why it is an important part of his life.

“My first piece of serious jewellery was a platinum diamond solitaire [ring], which I commissioned for myself in Dublin around 1999,” explains Douglas. This ring is the piece that Douglas is most sentimental about too.

This ring remains a firm favourite, but Douglas is also proud of his bespoke cufflinks collection too: “My favourite [pieces of jewellery] are my bespoke cufflinks collection, particularly a pair of emerald cufflinks created by The Jewel Box some years ago,” Douglas says. These cufflinks - featured in the image - are still one of his favourite pieces of fine jewellery. 

“It was one of my first significant pairs of cufflinks commissioned from The Jewel Box. They are unique and contain many personal suggestions made by Vinod [the founder] as part of the design process.”

Douglas says that his favourite precious metal is platinum - for its “robustness” - and his favourite gemstone is the sapphire because he appreciates the wide variety of colours sapphires are available in.

As for possible future jewellery pieces, Douglas says he would love to commission a Prince of Wales feather pin. And as for his personal style, he says he would describe it as “subtle with a bit of sparkle”.
